Weeds Forum provides valuable insights, ideas and opportunities

Over 80 Landcarers, landowners, government staff, researchers and interested community members attended the Landcare ACT’s Weeds Forum held online on Wednesday, 3 November 2021.

Karissa Preuss, Landcare ACT CEO, said the event provided an opportunity for community Landcarers to hear from decision-makers, experts and weeds warriors on the current weeds management strategies in the ACT and across the broader. “We were pleased to have Rebecca Vassarotti MLA, Minister for the Environment and weeds experts from across industry and government, present and share their insights on weeds management,” said Ms Preuss.

“The Forum also allowed the sharing of perspectives and collaborative discussions around challenges and opportunities. The ideas collected from the Forum will help to inform and shape Landcare ACT Community Views on Weeds paper, which will be released in the New Year.”

“In the ACT, Landcarers play an important role in terms of weeds control. Our paper aims to bring together community perspectives on weeds management to help inform decision-makers.”

Independent Chair of Landcare ACT, Dr Maxine Cooper, said that we need to share and work together to improve and sustain our landscapes.

“Weeds are indeed a wicked problem – by definition, a wicked problem is one that is complex, has no easy solution and changes over time,” said Dr Cooper.

“And all of us, the government, landholders, community organisations and community Landcare volunteers are needed in identifying solutions.”

All information from the Forum will be available by 18 November 2021 on Landcare ACT’s website. The Weeds Forum is part of the Smart Farms Small Grants 2 program currently being delivered by Landcare ACT funded through the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.
