Dear Members and Stakeholders,

We are pleased to provide this update following the Board meeting held on Monday, 9 February.

The Board welcomed newly appointed Director Andrew Cleary to the first meeting of the year. Directors also received a comprehensive briefing from Dr Pene Mathews, ACT Human Rights Commissioner, on the emerging Right to a Healthy Environment and the important role that Landcare and landcaring volunteers play in supporting its implementation.

The Board has approved the commencement of work on Landcare ACT’s new Strategic Plan, to be led by Currie Communications. This project will include a scan of comparable organisations and broad consultation with landcare stakeholders across the ACT and region. Members and partners who wish to participate in the consultation process are warmly encouraged to get in touch.

The Board noted good progress across our major projects.
The ACT Community Waterways Project continues to exceed expectations, with partners delivering significant weed control, planting, survey work and cultural land management activities across local waterways.
The Grasslands and Grassy Woodlands Project has delivered well-attended workshops and webinars, with further work commencing to support the threatened Black Gum.
The Young Farmers Network Advisory Panel has met for the first time, generating fresh and innovative ideas to advance sustainable farming in our region.
In the Nature Connection Project, preparation is underway for more community walks, with further information to follow shortly.

Directors also noted upcoming stakeholder engagement activities. Landcare ACT will attend the Volunteers ACT Open Day on 28 March at the UC Refectory, sharing a stall with the ACT Government NRM team to showcase land-caring volunteer groups and encourage young people and families to get involved. Landcare ACT will also participate in meetings of the Nature Conservation Forum and the ACT NRM Advisory Committee in the coming week, advocating for positive outcomes for nature on behalf of our members.

Finally, planning is now underway for the 2026 ACT Landcare Awards, to be held during Landcare Week (3–9 August). Landcare ACT is working closely with Landcare Australia, members and the ACT Government to ensure this year’s Awards shine a light on the remarkable contributions volunteers and groups make to caring for our local landscapes.

The Board thanks all members, partners and volunteers for their continued commitment and support.
