ACT Nature Conservation Strategy and Climate Change Strategy now open for public consultation

Yesterday, Landcare ACT joined Friends of Grasslands, the ACT Conservation Council and ACT Farmers for the launch of the Draft ACT Nature Conservation Strategy. Based on the Nature Conservation Act (2014), the strategy sets a clear and practical direction for protecting local biodiversity, responding to the pressures of a growing city and supporting a future where nature is thriving.

“The new Nature Conservation Strategy will set a clear, long-term vision for our nature conservation goals in the ACT, guiding future legal, policy and program development, while supporting ecological recovery, conservation partnership and ensuring an enduring impact, achieving nature positive outcomes for Canberra…Protecting nature is a shared responsibility. By working together including with Traditional Custodians, landholders, businesses and the broader community, we can ensure our bushland, waterways and wildlife are protected for generations to come. This consultation is about everyone working together to set the right direction.” Said Minister Orr.

The ACT Government is now inviting the community to share their thoughts on the strategy’s guiding principles, its proposed targets and how well it encourages and supports community involvement.

The Government has also released Canberra’s next Climate Change Strategy for consultation. This strategy will guide climate action from 2026 to 2035 and help the ACT respond to the realities of a warming climate. By 2050, average temperatures in the ACT are expected to rise by around two degrees.

“Our community is central to driving climate action. We want to hear what resonates with people, the challenges they see ahead, and the opportunities they believe we should prioritise,” Minister Orr said.

Both strategies offer important opportunities for the community to help shape a more resilient and nature positive Canberra.

The ACT Government is seeking feedback on the draft Strategys and their guiding principles, strategic targets and how effectively it supports community participation.
