A dose of nature – new program to improve the wellbeing of Canberrans through nature-based activities

Canberrans are invited to tap into the healing power of nature-connection through a new Landcare ACT program publicly announced at Dickson Wetlands today.

Dr Maxine Cooper, Landcare ACT Chair, announced the commencement of the Landcare ACT Wellbeing for Nature program, which provides Canberrans with the opportunity to experience the therapeutic benefits of nature.

“The program is about providing a dose of nature to improve wellbeing, social connections and help Canberrans with their overall health. This is a win-win, as nature and our community will benefit,” said Dr Cooper.

Karissa Preuss, CEO Landcare ACT, explained that the program has been designed in collaboration with health and community organisations and aims to improve wellbeing amongst Canberrans by engaging in various nature-based activities.

“Landcare ACT’s Wellbeing Program builds on feedback from ACT Landcarers, along with international experience, which demonstrates that nature-based activities can improve individuals’ social connections, mental health, recovery and wellbeing,” said Ms Preuss.

“The program includes a range of nature-based activities including guided walks, conservation activities and therapeutic horticulture.

“We have designed the program in collaboration with Wellways and look forward to continuing to work with them and numerous other health, community and environmental organisations across Canberra.

“This program is for all Canberrans. We invite anyone interested to visit our website and register to be involved. We will also be offering specialised activities for diverse ages and backgrounds.”
