The 'Connecting Nature Connecting People' project aims to improve the ACT’s urban ecological connectivity, and increase community understanding and engagement with urban habitat and biodiversity. By embracing the passion, knowledge, and enthusiasm of our local community groups, the CNCP Connectivity Area Projects will deliver on-ground activities to improve ecological connectivity in urban areas. The CNCP Connectivity Area Projects also seek to increase the broader community’s knowledge of and engagement with creating connected native habitat.

Community Landcarers are invited to participate in the program. You can attend a workshop about the project, including a presentation, an opportunity to ask questions, and information on how groups can get involved in on-the-ground components. The workshops are being facilitated by Landcare ACT and the Catchment Groups, in partnership with the ACT government.

Project area selection

The CNCP team is also calling for community nominations of urban open space areas across Canberra which, with the help of government funded planning and restoration activities, have the potential to enhance ecological connectivity.

Groups nominating must be registered with the TCCS Urban Parks and Places Volunteering program.

Based on community nominations, the CNCP team will select up to 18 urban open space areas and, working closely with community groups and ecologists, either:

(i) develop a connectivity plan that focuses on activities to restore or enhance ecological
connectivity in fragmented areas and the implementation of some of the activities
included in the plan, or

(ii) if there is an existing restoration plan developed by the community group that is fit for
purpose, agree on activities included in that plan that could restore or enhance ecological
connectivity outcomes.

Nominated sites with existing citizen science programs, e.g., Waterwatch, Frogwatch, VegWatch, or sites already surveyed by Canberra Birds, Friends of Grasslands, Canberra Nature Map or other community-based groups, will be highly regarded during the selection process.
Final area selection will be made by an ACT Government panel based on the nominations, while also considering the spread of projects geographically, the range of ecosystem types being restored, and the target species for which habitat connectivity is being improved.
The nominated community contact person will be advised of the outcome of the assessment.
Areas nominated but not selected for this project may be considered for future ACT Government projects.
